A recumbent bike is a safe, low-impact exercise option for people of all abilities. If you’ve tried an upright exercise bike and found it to be uncomfortable, a recumbent bike could be the perfect alternative. Unlike upright models, recumbent bikes feature a wide seat with a backrest to reduce strain on the spine.

SeatBodyFit bikes are available in both recumbent and upright models. The main difference between the two models is seat design. The upright model comes with a padded seat that's broader than, but still greatly resembles, a conventional bike seat. The upright seat adjusts up and down to fit a range of body sizes. The recumbent BodyFit bike comes with a step-through frame design. The recumbent seat is wider and flatter than an upright seat, and it comes with a backrest.

The seat adjusts forward and back, instead of up and down, to accommodate different leg lengths. Handlebars and Heart Rate MonitorsThe upright BodyFit bike comes with handlebars that curve out, then up, to either side of the console. Silvery metal patches on the handlebars indicate handgrip heart rate monitors. Grasp both of these and, after a few seconds, the bike console will display your heart rate.

Note that although some product descriptions may describe these as 'EKG' pulse monitors, they are not medical-grade equipment. The recumbent model comes with two sets of handlebars: Horizontal handlebars mounted just below the console and a second pair of handlebars on each side of the seat, parallel to the edges of the seat. The handgrip heart rate monitors are mounted on the seat handlebars.

Manual

ConsoleThe BodyFit console is mounted directly in front of you. The console displays speed, rotations per minute, distance traveled, time spent and a rough estimate of calories burned.

It also contains the controls that allow you to manually adjust between the bike's 16 levels of resistance, or select one of its six preprogrammed workouts. Adapter and PedalsMost promotional images don't display it, but this bike comes with an AC/DC adapter.

It must be plugged into the wall socket to function. The counter-weighted pedals come with toe straps. For maximum calf involvement, slide your feet into the straps, then flex and extend your ankles as you pedal.

Manual and Quick StartThe 'Manual' program is the most basic exercise program on a recumbent bike that can usually be set up one of two ways. You can choose the 'Quick Start,' where you simply start pedaling, press the button and choose your resistance. This is the easiest setting and you can change the resistance at any time. If you choose the 'Manual' program, often you put in your age, body weight, resistance level and duration of your workout. You can still change the resistance at any time and control your pace. Hills and Intervals'Hills' and 'Intervals' are two other common options on a recumbent bike. Both of these programs will change the resistance level for you throughout your workout.

Set up usually starts the same as the 'Manual' program, but when you choose a resistance level it will be the maximum resistance during your workout. So if you choose Level 5, you will experience Levels 1 through 5 during the course of your workout. In a 'Hill' program, changes will be gradual and sustained, as if you were pedaling uphill then downhill. In an 'Interval' program, changes will be random. For example, you may pedal one to two minutes at your highest resistance and then recover for a few minutes at a low level before it goes up again.

Fat BurnMany forms of cardio equipment have a 'Fat Burn' program. Because the majority of adults in the United States are overweight, they think this is the best choice. But this may not be the case.

The 'Fat Burn' program is a steady state program that tries to keep your heart rate at a moderate range so that the calories you burn come mostly from fat and not carbohydrates. Sounds good, but you will actually burn less total calories during your workout leading to less total weight loss. Also, you will need to wear a heart rate monitor or hold onto the sensors throughout this workout. Resistance during a 'Fat Burn' program will adjust automatically to reach a goal heart rate based on your age.
